Irish Wave 3
A series of visual arts events in Beijing & Shanghai to celebrate Ireland’s presence in China.
Irish Wave aims to enable the people of Beijing to gain insight into contemporary Irish Culture, to portray the diversity and global aspect of ‘Irishness’, to inspire them to visit Ireland and to investigate our heritage. A series of exhibitions & installations across a broad spectrum of themes at venues will be held. These will be accessible to the widest and most diverse possible section of the Beijing & Shanghai communities. In particular focussing on women artists to highlight the inequality of opportunity which exists for them in China and to raise the profile of female practitioners generally.

‘ Bag’ co -curated by Fion Gunn with Zheng Xuewu

‘Bag’ is a multi-media, interactive exhibition of artworks made by contemporary artists on the theme of ‘BAG’. The exhibition will be embedded in retails outlets which sell bags thereby combining fine art & commerce and actively creating new audiences for 21st century creativity.

This collaborative Irish/Chinese installation exhibition will explore the iconography of the ‘BAG’ in our cultures in an often playful and experimental way.

The exhibition will comprise an ‘art trail’ throughout the Mall where individual artworks are displayed in the midst of the various franchises and will lead to the central exhibition space where the rest of the artworks will be featured.

It is anticipated that the selected artists will produce a wide range of artefacts, installations and performances. The project is flexible and the artworks are curated in a site specific and appropriate way.

Underpinning BAG is the recognition that art and commerce can make their peace and promote subtle and complex messages which enhance their own values and make for sustainable creative enterprise

Bag will be fully documented & filmed by Jane Clegg. The IRISH WAVE documentary will be screened in the main atrium of the Mall.
