As the Year Of Craft draws to a close I am inviting; artists, historians, clients, collectors, gallerists, writers, friends, patrons and lovers of glass to participate in Glass Net Ireland.
In 2011 An Post, in association with the Crafts council of Ireland, issued the stamp illustrated above with an image of my work entitled ‘Catch a Breath’ This stamp was one in a series of five stamps issued to mark the year of Craft. The image is of a glass butterfly net, with a gently curving glass handle, which hangs in space creating an ethereal shadow. This piece speaks of a carefree time, of tripping through a meadow as a child, unconscious of time and chasing the elusive. There is a certain wistfulness expressed in this work, in wanting to remember to make time to dawdle, to see the beauty in the ordinary, and to celebrate the little things we can so quickly forget when life gets too busy.
Inspired by the occasion of this issue, I am collaborating with An Post to build on the archive of information about contemporary Irish glass. I am inviting anyone with a story or connection with contemporary Irish Glass to write to me with accounts of their personal experience with glass. It may be the story of a piece of glass you received as a special gift or inheritance, a piece that you commissioned, a story of a relative who works in glass, an artist you met, collaborated with or documented. It may be an encounter with a work or process you wish to have recorded in the national archive and publicly accessible.
Photographic images, original documents and hand written or email accounts- all are acceptable but cannot be returned. Please include your own name and contact address and feel free to spread the net as wide as you wish! The stamp is available from An Post – on line http://www.irishstamps.ie/shop/c-94-the-year-of-craft-in-ireland.aspx or in larger post offices countrywide.

Waterwatch, a water conservation project at Glenasmole national school Dublin.
Discovering the imprtance of conserving water through exploring the properties of glass.
Project Concept
Bringing an awareness to the school wide campaign to conserve water at home and at school while learning about glass.
Developing a knowledge on sources of water, qualities of water, water use, wastage, water reuse and water conservation. Learning how children can be part of a national campaign to save water starting in their own home and school.Learning about glass, its inherent qualities, uses, and accessibility to them as an exciting material in which to transfer ideas and concepts, which helps to bring awareness on water conservation.
Children from Glenasmole, Dublin, age 4-5.

How it worked!
In this project children of a very young age became aware of water conservation through engagement and responsibility. Through this project they learnt to observe why and how to conserve water by understanding our dependency on it as a natural resource. Research activities included water harvesting, developing a ‘water watch squad’ to observe discuss and report on findings in home and school. Establishing a school wide quest to find uses for wastewater.
Children developed an understanding of glass qualities equating them with similar properties of water, e.g. transparency, magnification, reflection etc. they created objects from domestic and industrial glass waste and harvested water. This included making sound vessels with water and glass vessels. Wind, and percussion instruments were made. The students discussed and listened to variation in tone. Comparing vessels and water levels creating different sounds. They arranged sounds into ascending scale. The project was widened to involve older classes to compose and create water ‘rain song’ to be performed on harvested water and repurposed glass vessels.

Outcome
Awareness of the school Water Conservation campaign was heightened to reach the wider community.
Children aged 4 -6 were the driving force behind this awareness. They learnt to work with glass in a schoolroom setting, making a series of items using repurposed glass to bring awareness of this campaign to the fore. This included glass collage drawing and painting on glass, based on watery subjects, glass instruments and personal water conserving teeth rinsing aids. A performance on the musical instruments is to take place in the school by the older children in the coming months.

‘Beauty and the Bees’ Garden Bloom 2010 Garden show in collaboration with 3Design at the Phoenix park Dublin. June 3rd to 8th 2010 Sponsored by Burts Bees
Winners of ‘Best in Category’ for small gardens
Winners of Designers choice Bloom 2010
The ‘Beauty and the Bees’ garden by 3Design in Collaboration with Róisín de Buitléar highlighted the vital role the urban gardener can play to ensure the survival of the honeybee. Honey producing bees are fundamental to the survival of the human race. Over the last three years 25% of Irelands bee population perished. By creating a planting scheme that would be very attractive to bees visitors instantly saw which plants can help to save the bee population. Honey-coloured nectar-producing plants flowed through curved beds from the pavilion. Locally sourced hard materials acted as visual links symbolising the life of the bee – Victorian honeycomb shaped cast iron tiles and a slatted glass screen echoed the hive. A tall glass floored pavilion offered a sheltered relaxing place to observe the insects in action. A narrow channel flowing below provided water, an essential element for honey production.
Róisín de Buitléar designed a series of sculptural forms that appeared throughout the garden suggesting the frenetic flight of the bee and lusciousness of golden liquid honey.
